ETHNIC MINORITIES DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECTED BY CORONAVIRUS – STUDY:
Ethnic minority groups are disproportionately affected by the novel Coronavirus, with Blacks and Asians at increased risk of COVID-19 infection compared to white individuals, according to an analysis published in The Lancet medical journal.

TENNESSEE
VOLKSWAGEN BREAKS GROUND ON FIRST BATTERY TESTING LAB IN NORTH AMERICA: Chattanooga will soon be home to an approximately $22 million battery engineering lab that Volkswagen of American recently broke ground on. The lab is part of the company’s electric vehicle production facilities currently under construction. The purpose of the new facility will be to test and validate electric vehicle cells and battery packs that will be used in North American production.

TENNESSEE MAKES $50 MILLION IN FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR SMALL BUSINESS GRANTS: In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and all of its economic hardships, small businesses in Tennessee are suffering at a disproportionate rate. Without wide-reaching digital campaigns and online shopping experiences, small businesses find themselves at the mercy of shutdowns and gathering size regulations imposed at the state and local levels.

KENTUCKY
NUCOR BREAKS GROUND ON $1.7 BILLION STEEL MANUFACTURING MILL IN KENTUCKY: The nation’s largest steel producer broke ground on a nearly $2 million facility that significantly expands its presence in Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear announced. Nucor Corp., which announced plans for $1.7 billion Meade County manufacturing mill last year during the term of Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, also recently completed the first phase of an $826 million expansion project at its mill in Ghent.

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE RECEIVES A RECORD BREAKING $170 MILLION FOR RESEARCH FUNDING: The University of Louisville received 170 million dollars in research funding during the 2020-2021 fiscal year. This is a record-breaking amount of research funding for the university and an increase of about 18 million dollars from the previous fiscal year. The money that the university received is used to train students, research vaccines and develop new manufacturing technology.

WEST VIRGINIA
MITSUBISHI EXPANDING OPERATIONS IN WEST VIRGINIA, CREATING HUNDREDS OF JOBS: Mitsubishi will be expanding their operations at the North Central West Virginia Airport. This move is expected to create up to 200 new, well-paying jobs with good benefits. When all is said and done and the expansion is complete, Mitsubishi is expected to employ over 700 people at the airport, becoming a major contributor to the region in the role of a job creator.

SOUTHWESTERN ENERGY DIGS DEEPER INTO OHIO AND WEST VIRGINIA: Southwestern Energy Co. is expanding its operations in Ohio and West Virginia through its acquisition of Montage Resources, adding local employees and new communities to its existing Appalachian operations, the company announced. The acquisition, completed Nov. 13, includes nearly 325,000 acres in Southeast Ohio and Northwest West Virginia, adding to Southwestern Energy’s position of 786,000 acres across West Virginia, Northeast Pennsylvania and Southwest Ohio.
