FACILITY: 172 economies are now engaged in discussions

to potentially participate in COVAX, a global initiative aimed at working with vaccine manufacturers to provide countries worldwide equitable access to safe and effective vaccines, once they are licensed and approved. COVAX currently has the world’s largest and most diverse COVID-19 vaccine portfolio – including nine candidate vaccines, with a further nine under evaluation and conversations underway with other mayor producers.

MINORITY ENTREPRENEURS AT A TIPPING POINT AS BLACK-OWNED BANKS DWINDLE IN THE U.S.:

Black Americans have been hit disproportionately hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the White-led financial institutions that could theoretically offer economic support may simply not be enough. The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated a crisis for Americans already facing poor economic and health outcomes, and highlights the lack of financial services institutions run by Black founders and executives.

COVID-19 HAS HIT BLACK AMERICANS HARDEST. HEALING THIS DIVIDE WOULD LIFT THE NATION:

– Black Americans are nearly twice as likely to live in areas that would be disproportionately disrupted by a health crisis like

COVID-19.

– A median white family’s wealth is 10 times that of a median Black family.

– Addressing the racial wealth gap could increase the US GDP

by 4-6% by 2028.

– Only 20% of Black workers are able to work from home

during the current crisis.

TENNESSEE EXTENDS RELIEF TO MORE SMALL BUSINESSES HURT BY CORONAVIRUS: Tennessee is expanding its financial relief program for small businesses hurt by the coronavirus pandemic this spring. Gov. Bill Lee said Friday the state will use another $83.5 million from the state’s share of the federal Coronavirus Relief Fund to provide grants of up to $30,000 each for any small business, tourist attraction or farm-relate business that has suffered lost business and income due to the the COVID-19 virus.

TYSON EXPANDS TENNESSEE POULTRY PROCESSING PLANT: An expansion

of a Tyson Foods Inc. poultry processing plant in Union City, Tenn., is now complete, said Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. Work on the project began earlier this year, but announcements and construction were delayed due to the global pandemic, the company said. The project – which included expanding the current harvesting area and added more processing lines – added 40,000 square feet to the existing facility and represents a total investment of $87.6 million.

UPS READIES FREEZER FARMS TO SHIP VIRUS VACCINE – IF WE GET ONE:

United Parcel Service Inc. is building two giant freezer farms capable of super-cooling millions of vials of a Covid-19 vaccine, preparing for the day when it will need to deliver the medicine at high speed across the globe. The facilities, under construction in

Louisville, Kentucky, and the Netherlands, near UPS air hubs, will house a total of 600 deep-freezers that can each hold 48,000 vials of vaccine at temperatures as low as -80 Celsius (-112 Fahrenheit). That’s on par with some of the coldest temperatures in Antarctica.

BECOMING AN ARTREPRENEUR – PARTNERSHIP CREATES NEW E-COMMERCE OPPORTUNITY FOR KENTUCKY ARTISTS: Although the state’s economy is slowly reopening, the past few months have not been easy ones for artists. BUSINESSES IN WEST VIRGINIA, KENTUCKY CAN GET DISASTER LOANS:

Certain small businesses in several West Virginia and Kentucky counties can apply for loans as a result of excessive moisture and cold temperatures during April and May.

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced the Working Capital Disaster Loans on Monday. They are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and private nonprofit organizations.
